WHY STOCK?
When an editor or art director of an ad agency is looking for a photograph to illustrate something, there are three common sources to satisfy his/her needs.
1. ASSIGNMENT PHOTOGRAPHY
Sometimes the needs are so specific that a photographer must be hired, but often the needs could just as easily be met by one or the other of the sources below. The disadvantage of assignment photography is that it is usually the most expensive of the choices.
2. CLIP ART
There are now many images available either on the internet, at no cost at all, or from CD rom clip art discs, for which an editor pays for the disk and is then free to use the images in any way or as often as they wish. Sometimes tourist bureaus will have photographs on file which can be used at no cost. The advantage of these sources is their low cost. The disadvantages are the low resolution of most of the digital images and the fact that many photographs from tourist bureaus are "tired". Another serious disadvantage especially from the viewpoint of ad agencies and some editors is the non-exclusivity of the images. One can imagine a situation here where two competing products find out they are both using the same image to help sell their product. Another disadvantage of these sources is that you might not find the image you are looking for on a clip art disc after paying for it, or you might spend an inordinate amount of time searching the free sources of images.
3. STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY
Stock photography is available from many photographers, such as myself, or from stock photo agencies. With stock photography art editors are often able to find what they want very quickly. The photo researchers at the stock agencies or the photographer him/herself will do the research to get you a selection of suitable images.
